BipPass vs HashiCorp Vault for application secrets
Checked September 26, 2026
Vault is infrastructure — dynamic credentials, PKI, encryption as a service — and a cluster to run. BipPass is for teams whose app secrets need encrypting and sharing, not operating.
| BipPass | HashiCorp Vault | |
|---|---|---|
| Can the operator decrypt your secrets? | No. Values are encrypted on your device; the server stores ciphertext it has no key for | Yes. An unsealed Vault decrypts for authorised clients; whoever runs the cluster holds the keys |
| Inject into a process | bippass run -- <cmd> | Vault Agent process supervisor, or envconsul |
| Operating it | Nothing to run | Self-managed cluster (Community or Enterprise), or HCP Vault Dedicated |
| Pricing | Free for up to 3 people; then $6 (Basic) or $15 (Professional) per member per month | Community edition free; HCP Vault Dedicated billed per cluster-hour and per client; Enterprise by quote |
| Licence | Proprietary | Business Source License 1.1 since 2023 (OpenBao is the open-source fork) |
Different jobs
Vault is the standard for short-lived database credentials, PKI, transit encryption and policy across large fleets. It is also a system someone has to run, unseal, upgrade and back up. Most teams reaching for it to stop sharing .env files need a much smaller thing.
Trust model
Vault protects secrets from everyone except the Vault itself: once unsealed, the cluster can decrypt anything it stores. With BipPass no server component can — values are encrypted and decrypted only on members’ devices.
HCP Vault Secrets, HashiCorp’s simpler hosted product, reached end of life on 1 July 2026, so it is not compared here.
